Activity Report S.C.O.B.G.A. for February 2007

At our January 28th meeting the 10 names were shortened to two names at our meeting of April 22 / 07 these two names and only these two names will be voted on. The names that were decided to have our final vote on are:::

#1—South Central Ontario Fish and Game Association Inc.

#2---South Central Ontario Fish and Wildlife Association Inc.

All the names submitted were great names and I take this opportunity to thank everyone that submitted a name for the members to choose from. The two names that received the most E-Mail, Mailed In and hand presented are the two that are above. As before in your newsletter you will be receiving a ballot that can be E-Mailed, Mailed or be handed in at the meeting on the 22nd of April.

We have now changed our club insurance over to O.F.A.H. Club Insurance as well as taken out property insurance on the hatchery building at 951 Grandview Ave. Oshawa. We were required to have more than 80% of our club members O.F.A.H. members to get the rate on the property insurance. The savings in coverage will benefit all club members in their out of door activities/ hunting, fishing, trapping etc., etc..

You are probably aware of the Atlantic Salmon Reintroduction efforts by the many stakeholders in this province. Our members have been in the forefront of this effort in the Coburg Creek Area. We have helped put 70,000 swim up fry into the creek which was one of the three that was picked by M.N.R. to be the best waterways to start this reintroduction. Later that summer we assisted in removing a major blockage near Ball’s Mill on this same creek. In September we helped release an additional 15,000 fingerlings that are from the same spawning, but reared at the Normandale Hatchery by M.N.R..

It was about this time that we gave a lot of information to the O.F.A.H. about how we build and operate our Class Room Hatchery’s that we initiated approximately 7 years ago in the Oshawa schools. The O.F.A.H. has plans of expanding this program to 12 schools this year and approximately 60 more within a year or two. We should be very proud that our program has been accepted by O.F.A.H. as the template for this program. Also at this time we have Atlantic Salmon eggs in our Class Room Hatchery System. These egg’s were eyed up by M.N.R. at the Harwood Hatchery on Rice Lake and supplied to a select group of schools in Ontario. We have two of these set ups in Oshawa.

The hatchery is a natural extension to what we are doing in the Class Room Hatchery’s and both programs should compliment each other. A group of us were at the building on the 11th of February to assess what work has to be done as soon as the weather cooperates and gets warmer. Meanwhile I am still working on the water supply and getting equipment lined up.

Carl Reaman has not been idle as he has the Fishing Show Ticket Sales all in hand but he probably could use a hand or two at the Sportsman Show---March 17th—and if not there the Oshawa Center April 30/ May 1st to May 6th . Give any of the club contacts a call and we will get Carl to get in touch with you. Remember this is one of our clubs main fundraisers that we really count on.

Randy Love will need your assistance on April 1st to assist at our Twelfh Annual Big Buck Day at Little Britain. He is hoping to have three top speakers in their respective fields. He has the World Moose calling Champion Ken Capling doing his thing—I have sat in on his seminars and they are great. Larry Smith a hunter with a wealth of information on bow hunting. David Gibson from Powerseed’s in Lindsay who will be telling you how to get that elusive whitetail and turkey on to property that you wish to hunt.

This has been a rather lengthy update, and I hope I have not bored you with some of things that your club has been doing,  but I hope to do this again in March and let you know what has happened and the plans of the future.
